If you have young kids, you have a one in 10 chance of having to deal with head lice. This is especially true of girls between the ages of 3 and 12.

Itching is the most obvious sign, but your child may just get the sensation of tickling or that something moving around in her hair. But it’s not unusual for children to be embarrassed and keep these signs from you, so if you see them scratching a lot, go on a head hunt for lice.

Lice appear in three stages: eggs, nymphs and adults. Eggs, called nits, look like dandruff but do not shake off easily; they are firmly fixed near the scalp. They hatch into baby lice, called nymphs, which grow into adults by biting and feeding on blood. This takes about a week. Adults are the size of sesame seeds. They can be colored dingy white all the way to reddish-brown.
