Julie stared at the salmon colored carpet remnant in her hand.   She had promised her mother that if they carpeted her bedroom, she’d use every piece of scrap for something useful and creative.  Her parents had taken the challenge.  Some things had been easy.  She’d made a throw pillow for her bed.  One strip had become a scratch post for Willy, the cat.  But now there were these small odds and ends that Julie simply could not imagine doing anything useful with.  Really, she shouldn’t even be thinking about it.  She had a big math test tomorrow.  Julie sighed, rose, and picked up her knapsack.  Then it struck her!  Fifteen minutes later, those small carpet pieces lined the inside of her knapsack’s straps.  Great cushioning.  Her mother would be proud.
