Then, they remove the makeup from the face before bedtime. Makeup that is considered waterproof may require extra scrubbing or the use of specially designed makeup remover to wash it from the face. Conventional makeup that is not waterproof usually smears and fades during the day. To maintain a fresh look, the makeup wearer must reapply the makeup regularly throughout the day. It is not unusual for makeup wearers to keep items, such as lipstick, eyeliner and pressed powder, on hand at all times. These items are frequently found in handbags and glove compartments.

Permanent makeup does not require frequent applications. In fact, permanent makeup rarely shows any signs of fading with the first three years following an application. How is this possible? Permanent makeup is not actually makeup. Instead, it is cosmetic tattoos that are specifically designed to have the appearance of conventional makeup. Like other tattoos, cosmetic tattoos are made of permanent dyes that are injected into the middle layer of the client’s skin. The designs remain in place for years. However, touchups are usually required after five years or more. Permanent makeup, also called micropigmentation or dermal pigmentation, must be applied by trained permanent makeup specialists. Permanent makeup technicians receive training at specialized permanent makeup schools, which train students in the application of permanent makeup technique, dye usage and proper sterilization of equipment.

Permanent makeup techniques are often based on the type of equipment used. Hand needles can be used if a permanent makeup technician desires optimal control during the application. However, the use of hand needles is not automated and can be quite time-consuming. Each injection of dye is performed individually, and the speed of the process is dependent on the coordination and quickness of the permanent makeup specialist’s hands. Automated machines are more frequently used, and many of the machines can inject dye into the client’s skin at a rate of at least 1800 injections per minute. The automated process is much faster than the hand method and offers good results. Automated machines offer an efficient manner in which to cover large areas of skin. This is especially important when the permanent makeup is used to even skin tone or cover large scars. However, specialists must be trained to control the machines that are used.

The quick application can make it easier from permanent makeup technicians to make errors during the application. The dyes that are used in permanent makeup applications are permanent. However, the dyes are approved for use in skin injections by the FDA and are considered less harmful than many of the chemicals that are found in conventional makeup items. Permanent makeup dyes are inserted into the skin through small needles. Most automated machines use pre-sterilized disposable needles, which are not shared between permanent makeup clients. However, the hand method often uses needles that are not disposable.

Permanent makeup equipment that is used on multiple clients must be effectively sterilized between uses. Autoclaves are typically used in the sterilization process. Autoclaves subject the equipment to super-hot steam in a pressurized environment. The pressure and high temperatures kill bacteria and other pathogens. Sterilization is required to prevent the passing of disease from one client to another. Permanent makeup offers great convenience and durability. However, it must be applied properly, and sterile conditions must be maintained during the application.
