Saying No At Work

We are often encouraged to go for it, to say “yes” to every possible opportunity that will come our way, and to welcome such opportunities and treat them as if they are all the right ones that will open doors for us and take our careers to the next level. Sometimes, though, we end up saying “yes” a little too often and to the wrong things, and as a result, we’re saddled with too many things to do and not enough time to focus on what matters.

Shelley, a legal assistant, found herself plagued by piles of things to do in the office. Now that seems normal in any workplace, but in her case, she may have brought it all on herself. “I didn’t want to seem disagreeable and I thought that my career would be on the line if I said no to anyone,” she confesses. And so she ended up taking on more work than she was supposed to, even becoming the company’s network administrator (for which she wasn’t paid extra) on top of her actual job and watering the plants for one of the firm’s lawyers.

The lesson here is, if you say “yes” too often, people will take advantage of you, or you might end up exhausted doing too many things that you weren’t supposed to in the first place. What you have to do is to strengthen your resolve and to learn how to say “no” every once in a while. That doesn’t mean you have to turn down every request or opportunity. You simply need to learn to discern what tasks are important and which truly require your skills and which ones you don’t have to do yourself. When saying no to people, remember to remain pleasant and friendly–think about saying something like, “I wish I could, but I have so many things I need to work on right now.” Those who frequently come to you may require a bit more assertiveness from you, however. For instance, when they start complaining about what they need to you, stay polite and interested, but respond with something like, “Yeah, that sounds really tough. I know how you feel, I have a lot of things to do, too.”

Always keep your own priorities and responsibilities in mind. Don’t hesitate to say no if you feel you will be at a disadvantage. The Way Things Are

Both of my parents have been entrepreneurs. While they both owned their own companies, one lumber trading company and one window tinting company, I worked for them. It wasn’t anything too difficult, just filing and answering phones and whatnot. Anyway, it was almost impossible not to think that they expected me to start my own company like they did. Ive always had high expectations of myself, but somehow those expectations never included owning my own business or any other franchise opportunities. Though I knew I had to get to college and get a scholarship, I haven’t much planned for what kind of career I wanted to pursue. I’m majoring in English and psychology, and I can do practically anything with those. Currently I work for a newspaper as a copy editor and proofreader, at a psychology lab as a research assistant, and at an internet marketing company as an intern. My areas of skill are very diverse, and I think that I have built myself to be a very marketable person. But all of these talents are for naught if I don’t find a way to engage them. I want to be great. Not famous, just great. I want to be a poet, an author, who can live an immortal life in words. I want people to see that the muses have touched me, that they worked through me to make the beautiful phrases that come out of the page. But its a dream. Its no wonder I fell in love with a man who is also a dreamer. He wants to build an entire city that works without any kind of money and is entirely open source. He has much of the plans prepared, and I found them beautiful from our very first date. Both of us are determined to understand how the universe works. There’s definitely a system, call it fate or whatever, and it can be manipulated. Were both two people who have been able to beat the odds, and together I don’t think anything can stand in our way. I’m not sure that I can explain it except that it stems from the connection you have with the world. When you understand that you are a part of this world and that everything has something in common, it becomes easier to maneuver things so they go your way. I guess that all this is to say that I’m not worried. In the past, everything that I have sincerely wanted and asked for has worked out for me in one way or another. And that’s all one needs in life.
