- Is it the right fit? Getting the right fit helmet is as critical as getting a well made helmet. If your helmet doesn’t fit right, you could walk away from an accident just as injured as if your helmet didn’t work right. So, do not think that fit is a superficial issue. First, you should understand that helmet manufacturers make helmets for approximately four different head shapes. What you are looking for is a helmet that fits snugly. In fact, on Snell’s website they say that the helmet should fit “very” snugly. They also recommend that you wear it for five or ten minutes to see if you start to feel any pressure points. With some of the helmets you will look at, you will be able to exchange cheek pads and this can help with the overall fit.

- How old is it? While this may not be something you have ever thought of, according to Snell, helmets should be replaced every 5 years. This isn’t just an arbitrary number to keep snowmobile helmets in constant production, there are actual safety risks that increase with a helmet’s age. At the end of the day, snowmobile helmets will only need to do their job for a couple milliseconds in order to save your life, and as they age, the fibers and glues that perform that job break down. Consequently, a helmet that is 5 years old will not perform on the same level as one that is younger.
