Duck Decoys – Eye-catching On Water And In Your Home
If you’ve come across the words ‘duck decoys’, but aren’t too sure what they mean … chances are, you aren’t a duck hunter. Well, they are those realistic looking ducks which are used by hunters to attract different species of migratory ducks.
A duck decoy is primarily made of buoyant and lightweight composite materials or wood, which are molded and carved to create various ducks that are lifelike in appearance. Weighted with keels to keep them afloat and stable, these decoys are usually placed in lakes and ponds that are natural habitats for ducks, especially those that belong to migratory species. Apart from being used as hunting devices, these decoys make attractive table centerpieces, as well as to embellish walls.
Whether the need is for a working duck or a decorative one, here’s what you should know.
Working ducks – These are generally about 15 inches long and hand painted in duck colors with realistic, fine feather details. Search for duck decoys that are fitted with sand-filled keels as these offer better tipping and stability when afloat. For better duck hunting results, make sure to buy several of these imitation ducks, rather than just a couple, as the more you set up in water, the more chances you’ll have to attract ducks over-flying the area where they are placed. The material of such ducks is also another factor to be considered. For example, copolymer plastic is better suited for such hunting as they are waterproof, scratch proof, as well as crack, dent, and scuff resistant.
Decorative ducks – In general, ducks used for decorative purposes are handcrafted from solid wood, and are finally painted in attractive colors that closely resemble those of several popular types of ducks. These are available in different lengths, but should not be used for hunting purposes. You can use them to adorn a dining or living room center table and even on walls.
So, if you wish to catch the eyes of guests with a decorative duck at home, or those of real ducks when hunting, you may choose either of the two duck decoy options.
