The last couple of years have been really hard for many home owners.  Those that were fortunate enough to avoid foreclosure may have had to refinance with bad credit.  This meant paying a higher interest rate than when the initial mortgage was obtained. In turn, refinancing resulted in higher payments.

To refinance with bad credit, proof of the ability to pay the higher mortgage payment in addition to the current debt has to be shown.  Debt consolidation may be the only way to lower the debt to income ratio to qualify.  Another way to lower the debt to income ratio is to renegotiate with creditors to either settle or lower minimum payments.  If this process is too intimidating there are credit counselors available to help.

Working with credit counselors may seem like the best route to take, but even this route may impact your credit situation negatively.  A lender may look at working with a credit counselor as a crutch, and think the applicant can not manage their debt themselves.  Another lender may look at the picture from the standpoint of the applicant being responsible enough to seek help when things became unmanageable.  Therefore the individual has to decide whether or not working with a credit counselor is right for them.

The decision to refinance with bad credit may determine whether or not a family gets to stay in the home where cherished memories were built.  To those people, it may have been the only choice.  Others may not have that option.  If the hardship is still present, and debt consolidation is not the answer, the lender is not going to compound the likelihood of foreclosure.  A classic example would be an ongoing medical crisis where expenses and debt are still mounting.  In a case similar to the example, the decision to refinance with bad credit could be detrimental to both parties.
