Quinoa is a nutritious seed that has been cultivated for almost 6,000 years in South America.  You might have heard of quinoa being referred to as a grain, but in all actuality it is not.  Rather, it is a relative of chard and spinach.  Because it is wheat free and gluten free, it is the ideal food for anyone who suffers from food sensitivities.

Vegetarians especially like quinoa, thanks to the fact that it is one of a few plant based foods that offers your body a complete source of protein.  Unlike most vegetarian foods, quinoa contains all eight of the amino acids that humans require.  So, eating quinoa means that they no longer have to worry about mixing proteins because everything that they need is in the quinoa.

People watching their diets also find that quinoa is a welcome addition to their meal plans.  A one cup serving has just 220 calories and also provides your body with 5 grams of fiber and 8 grams of protein.  Even better is the fact that the carbohydrate content of quinoa is slow burning.  All of this really combines to keep the cravings at bay.

Of course, quinoa isn’t just for vegetarians and health nuts.  Even my young children love quinoa, thanks to its slightly crunchy texture and nutty taste.  I love you use it to make their favorites healthier.  Instead of Mac and cheese the old fashioned way, I love to make quinoa and cheese.  I also improve the nutritional profile of meatballs by adding in quinoa in place of breading.

There are many great places that you can find quinoa recipes.  Because quinoa is so popular with the vegetarian and vegan communities, vegetarian and vegan cookbooks are great places to look.  Of course, it is not necessary that you even buy a cookbook.  There are many great quinoa recipes that you can find for free with a quick search of the internet.
