If you’ve been to the beach recently, or even in the past few years, you’re sure to have seen at least one boy or man walk by wearing a pair of board shorts.  Trendy looking despite having been around since the 1970s, board shorts, unlike a standard pair of mens elastic waist shorts, are perfect for surfers.  It allows them less restrictions in the water, allowing them to do more on their surfboards than what would normally be possible.

Mens’ board shorts come in a wide selection of designs, but would usually be leaning towards surf-themed designs.  There are also quite a few in different color combinations, in checkers or other prints, or in Hawaiian-inspired designs.  Mens board shorts swimwear usually are made out of polyester or nylon, and are designed to be quick drying and durable enough to withstand contact with a surfboard and normally do not have an elastic waist, unlike mens elastic waist shorts, which a lot of other water sports enthusiasts use on the beach.  A Velcro fly is the most common means of fastening the shorts, in the absence of an elastic waistband.

Surfers generally choose board shorts that aren’t too long or too short, but regular buyers usually don’t have any preferences and are more concerned with the design.  The reasons surfers are quite particular with the length is because knee movement is very important in the sport.  Long shorts result in lesser knee control and could lead to accidents.  On the other hand, having them too short isn’t a good idea when it comes to weather and protecting the skin from the elements.  In any case, board shorts are water resistant and as stated above, dry easily once washed.

Quiksilver and Billabong are two of the world’s best-known manufacturers of board shorts, but there are a lot of alternate options to choose from online or at your nearest store.  Once you got yourself a pair of affordable yet durable mens board shorts, swimwear for surfing should no longer wipe you out, no pun intended.
