Often times kids will ask for an allowance because they want a little bit of extra spending money.  While I won’t tell you whether to or not to give your child an allowance, I do think it is a good idea for kids to be able to be creative and entrepreneurial and try to find ways to make their own money.  One valuable lesson that it can teach kids is that the money is tied to their work.  Since that it how it is for adults, it will allow your kids to learn that lesson early, and it could help them to be wiser with their money.  It can also teach them to save, so if they want a large toy or expensive toy, they’ll need to save up their money to get it.  So, what are some money making ideas for kids?

One thing that kids can do is yard work type of activities.  In the summer time, people need their lawns mowed, and so older kids will be able to mow lawns.  Younger kids can rake up leaves during the wall, and this can be a great way to make extra money if they go rake leaves soon after they start falling, because they could go out once they have all finished falling and make even more money.  Shoveling snow, if you get snow during the winter, is another idea.

Kids can also sell stuff they create.  Take them to a craft fair to see the types of crafts people buy and see if something sticks out to them that they’d like to make and sell.  or, they can make baked goods or sell lemonade by the side of the road.  Allow your kids to be creative and come up with ideas, and help them process whether or not it’ll be a good idea to try and sell those items.

Hopefully some of these ideas have sparked something that will allow your child to become more financially independent (or at least make a few extra bucks every now and then.)
