If you’re someone who needs to travel for business, then portable laptop printers are something to seriously consider researching. These models are designed with portability and lightweight in mind. You will find that the most portable and lightest models will often cost more. If there is a performance stat that will make a difference in price it will be speed. As far as convenience goes, Bluetooth compatibility can also make a difference. Unless you get a direct thermal printer, make sure the model you buy is PictBridge-compatible. This will allow you to print directly from digital cameras, as well as some camera phones and DV camcorders. This used to be a unique feature, but most portable laptop printers now carry it.

If you’re on a tight budget and want something cheap, you can go with a used Canon BJC-85. It’s a portable color bubble jet with the dimensions of 2.3 x 11.8 x 6.2 inches and a weight of only 3.1 lbs. It can print up to 5 pages per minute black and 2 pages per minute color, which is not great for a portable laptop printer. Print resolution can only reach 720 x 360 dots per inch, which also isn’t terrific. This model is bought for compatibility, but even more so because it can be used as a scanner. All you need to do is purchase the IS-12 color image scanner cartridge, place it into the BJC-85, and the transformation is complete. This can be especially beneficial for those who need access to scans and prints while on the road. A 30-sheet paper feeder also makes life easier for those traveling. And the BJC-85 contains IrDA technology, which means you will be able to print via infrared.

This probably all sounds great, but I’m sure you caught the word ‘used’ above. The BJC-85 works well for some, but what if there were new portable laptop printers with better features, convenience, and stats for less money?
