Starting A Flower Garden
If this is your first time to plant a flower garden its probably best to start out small. If you start with a 25 sq. ft. garden this will leave room for around 20-30 plants with 3 types of annuals and 1 or 2 perennials. You can always increase its size as you go.
First make a detailed landscaping plan and dig a flower bed to fit that scheme. Choose your site well. Consider how much sun a certain area gets. A large variety of plants do well with about 6 hours of sunlight. You need to steer clear of utility lines and allow 3 feet from a building or a fence. If you reside where its a hot climate its best to have some shade in the afternoon. Flower beds positioned on the east side of the house do best. Even if your garden gets 12 or more hours of sunlight per day, you can still grow a flower garden. You will just need to water the garden more and carefully choose flowers that do well in warmer weather and in direct sunlight.
Check your soil by purchasing a soil test kit. Depending on the results, you might have to adjust the pH of the soil. Avoid shallow, rocky or steep sloped areas. Stay away from large trees and from large bushes. Its recommended that 20 feet away from a large tree and 5 feet away from a large bush seems to work best. The trees take away the nutrients and water from the flowers and is the main purpose for not getting too close.
Next you will need to remove all sod, grass, and weeds from the area you have decided on. Dig a bed at least 8 inches deep. Remove any rocks and debris from the soil. With a spade or rake level the beds surface area. Add 1 or more inches of compost or manure to the soil. If the soil is sandy, add peat moss since this will help the soil to absorb the water more evenly. If the soil test suggests the soil is too acidic, add lime to decrease the amount of acid. Purchase your plants and/or seeds. Follow the directions on the plant tags and on the back of the packages of seeds. Be sure to place smaller plants in the front rows. Water the garden as soon as you have finished planting. Remember to cut off old blooms since this is the only way for new blooms to grow.
Once you have spent a few months maintaining and enjoying your new flower garden you will have gained more confidence in yourself and will likely have a desire to make the garden larger and to experiment with different types of flowers. You can always increase the gardens size or beginĀ a second flower garden in another area of the yard, making this one larger than the first. If you run out of room, a flower pot is a great place for extra flowers.
