If you are in the market for a dog, you should consider getting one from a shelter, rescue organization, or through re-homing. You can get one much cheaper that way than you can by getting it elsewhere, they usually already have their shots, and they often come with certificates for a free spay or neuter. Plus you can feel good about knowing that you have helped to save an animal that may have been destroyed if you had not taken it in. Adoption also decreases sales of dogs bred by puppy mills or backyard breeders, making it less attractive to these people to churn out unhealthy and poorly bred animals. I re-homed a two year old dog whose owner had to go to assisted living. By that age, you also know more about what you are getting because any congenital health problems would have been discovered already, and they have already developed their personality. I did not have to go through the puppy stage, and she still has a lot of life left in her so she will be a part of our family for many years to come. She was already fixed, potty trained, and vaccinated. She does not chew things up, bark excessively, jump on people, or bite children. She is also a full breed dog with papers. She has truly been a problem free joy from the moment I brought her home.
