The number one rule when getting a cage for a chinchilla is that is should be as large as possible.  A large chinchilla cage can be purchased online, from your local pet store or even constructed at home!

If you want to pursue the latter option then you can find plenty of chinchilla cage plans online.  If you are good at DIY then this option will allow you to build the perfect custom cage for your chinchilla at a fraction of the cost of buying a new cage.

An alternative is to commission the production of a custom chinchilla cage.  This offers you the benefits of a homemade cage without you having to make it yourself!  Obviously, this is slightly more expensive but it will save you a lot of time and hassle.

The final option is simply to buy a new purpose built cage for chinchilla.  This can be good or bad, depending on the manufacturer.

No matter which route you go down, there are several design features that should always be present in a good chinchilla cage.  As we have already mentioned, size matters.  A chinchilla cage should be at least two meters cubed and ideally larger.  Although they are nocturnal creatures and very quiet during the day, chinchillas are very active at night.  They like to jump and so vertical height is especially important.  You must also make room for a sand bath, which is an essential item for any chinchilla.  Finally, you must include a nest box.  Optional items you may wish to include a running wheel and other toys for your chinchilla to enjoy.
