Air abrasion is a newer technology that some Berkeley Dental offices have adopted in order to eliminate tooth decay and resulting issues due to other related internal mouth problems. This is accomplished with the use of a tool that is a lot like a mini sandblaster. This tool creates a spray, or fine stream, of particles that consist of aluminum oxide, silica or a baking soda mix that is directed at the surface of the tooth using either compressed gas or air that runs internally through the hand held dental air abrasion tool. Any remaining particles left on the tooth are suctioned away.

Many Berkeley Cosmetic Dentists are turning toward the technology of air abrasion due to the many advantages that this process has over the more traditional methods. Some of the benefits include the following; air abrasion is a quiet option, unlike other tools that have a loud and somewhat frightening vibrating noise, this process does not create heat or pressure, this method requires less anesthesia than the more well-known drills, air abrasion is able to eliminate decay while maintaining more of the healthy tissue in the tooth, this method lessens the risk of  microfractures and chipped teeth and, because air abrasion is simple and faster, multiple teeth can be worked on in one visit instead of over an extended period of time.

Air abrasion is best for those with more shallow cavities and is the top choice of most dental facilities when it comes to children. Some individuals have reported sensitivity in the teeth due to the air abrasion procedure but there is no way to say for certain that had more traditional methods been employed the sensitivity would not have surfaced as well. It should also be noted that only composite materials for fillings can be used after this procedure as it is the best suited to adhere to the smoothness that the air abrasion creates.
