There has been quite a change in the personal computing market since touch screen laptop computers have been slowly creeping into your local electronics stores. Some people might not have noticed but these computers look like typical laptops from a distance. But upon closer inspection there is something different in the way the screens are hinged onto the rest of the computer. There is only one hinge and it swivels. This allows the screen to rotate and fold backwards flat to emulate a tablet PC. In this mode the laptop is now interfaced purely through the screen.

This touch recognition technology is definitely nothing new since touch screens have been around for many years now. What has changed are the different systems developed to recognize touch commands. The sensitivity of the touch recognition and the precision of reading different points of contact is what have made this a viable system for personal computing. The intricacies of commands that we are accustomed to using through keyboard and cursor can now be done with new technologies like multi touch. This allows the user to make more than one point of contact on the screen and the computer recognizes it as a specific command different from the single contact point.

Another thing that has made touch screen laptops feasible for regular day to day computer users is the improvements to the screen quality. Since many of us today not only work on our computers but also use it for entertainment, the ability to play back multimedia in high resolution and screen resolution is no longer a special feature but something we expect from our computer. New touch screen technologies allow brighter displays with much better contrast and resolution. It used to be that touch screens had to compromise brightness in order for the display to be able to recognize points of contact. But we are in a new era of both enhanced entertainment with functionality all rolled into one.
