Sooner or later you’re likely to wind up driving a car for the short term, either because you’re borrowing it from a friend who’s out of town or you plan on selling it or using it for parts or… Whatever. The point is, when this happens, you’ll probably be wondering… Should you bother with short term auto insurance?

The answer is: Yes, absolutely, and here’s why…

Reasons of Legality

If you get pulled over without insurance, the cops won’t take “I’m only driving it for the week!” as a valid excuse to get you out of paying some steep fines. You can pay a couple hundred up front to make sure that you’re okay in this regard, or pay several hundred more when you get caught without insurance, and even risk having your license taken away. It’s all about risk.

Reasons of Safety

You never know when you might get into a crash, and when it happens, you can be insured, having spent a couple hundred to keep all of your medical costs covered, or you can be uninsured, and spend a few thousand getting everything taken care of. Again, it comes down to risk. If you’re going out where it’s rainy, take an umbrella, even if it’s only a fifty fifty shot. If you’re going out on the road, get insured.

Reasons of Liability

After being found at fault in an accident, the last thing you want is to be paying out of pocket. No matter how long or how short you hope to be driving this car of yours, you want to be insured because, if you are found guilty in an accident, whether or not it was really your fault, the bottom line is that you’ll be expected to pay for everything yourself, regardless.

So what it comes down to is the simple fact of risk. Now, supposing that you want to chance it, go ahead. But if you’d like to make sure that you’re covered no matter what happens, get yourself covered under cheap short term auto insurance, or you may be footing the bill for whatever happens.
