The most common form of headaches are tension headaches and migraines. These two headache types are very common among millions of people and they affect all age groups (children, adults and older people). Headaches most of the times do not create any other more serious health problems but their pain can destruct daily activities.

Tension headaches are frequent in children who have a tendency to suffer from headaches. Headaches are heriditary and people who have this predisposition are more likely to suffer from headaches from an early age. Tension headaches are also caused by emotional and physical factors and their pain can be distinguished by other forms of headache because:

1. The pain is constant and affects the whole head and not just one side
2. The pain is dull and feels like a strong ache
3. The pain will normally go away if you take normal pain killers.

A way to differentiate tension headaches from migraine headaches is that migraine headaches are usually accompanied by vomiting and nausea and the pain becomes worse when you do some form of physical activity.

Migraine headaches affect much more women than men. Almost two thirds of women between the ages of 30-50 suffer from migraine headaches. This is because migraine headaches are affected by the hormonal changes occurring during the menstruation cycle of women. Other causes of migraine headaches are stress, lack of sleep or change in the sleep patterns, missing meals or change in the eating hours.

Migraine headaches expose the following symptoms:

1. Headache pain on one side of the head and behind the eyes
2. Vommitting
3. Nausea
4. Sensitivity to bright lights, loud sounds and strong smells

Many people tend to ignore the headache pain and do not try to seek medical advice. They let the pain go and come again. As a result they keep suffering from headaches while there are ways to get treatment. One the self help measures is to identify what is causing you the headache pain and try to avoid these factors. If this first step fails then you definitely need to inform your doctor about the pain and together you should find the ways using proper medication to get rid of the pain.
